"True Story, Grace Will Bear Me Out" [re-post; updated]

Many, many moons ago I worked on staff with a writer who used this expression whenever relating a tale from his past.  I used to think he was making a theological statement, that the veracity of his tale would be confirmed by the grace of God, then I found out his wife's name was Grace.

Works both ways...
