May 22, 2026 Gardening Report

With the intent of murdering slugs in our garden enclosure, I went to the local Grocery Outlet store to purchase the cheapest undrinkable swill I could find.

They sold the stuff in 25oz cans, three in a plastic sleeve.*

I can see the cynical wisdom in offering beer in 25 oz tall boys.

“How many beers do you drink a night?”

“Only one, doc.  Two at the most.”

Made my purchase, returned to the enclosure.  The shallow plastic ups we use as slug traps were already embedded in the group up to their lips; just fill ‘em full of cheap American beer and let those slimy little buggers drink themselves to death.

While tear the plastic sleeve off the cans, one slipped from my grasp and bounced off the chicken wire that makes up the walls of the enclosure.

I don’t know what it hit but the damn can EXPLODED, spraying beer all over me and the crop planted below it.

I grabbed the can and rotated it so the beer no longer came spewing out, saving maybe 2/3rds of the contents. 

Muttering under my breath, I used the rather large hole in the side of the can to squirt beer in the slug traps.

All of this is a rather roundabout way of saying if we invite you over to our house later this year and serve you some roma tomatoes, that’s why they taste like crappy American beer.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these.  We let the enclosure lay mostly fallow over the winter months, then we were both out of the country visiting New Zealand (yeah, yeah, I know, I know; report to come), then Soon-ok took a two week trip to help build multi-generational housing in Arminia, and they I got tagged for grampy duty most of this week but we’re hopefully back on our regular schedule for the rest of the summer.

This is going to be a tough year and having even the small harvest from our enclosure is going to help.

Take care of yourselves, folks.  It’s going to be a rough ride until he’s gone.
