Trump’s MSG Rally Considered As The 120 Days Of Sodom
Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1975 film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom is a movie I never recommend anyone seeing. Like The Human Centipede, it’s one of those films that once you understand the premise, you don’t need to actually see the movie.
In the case of Salò, Pasolini’s brilliant idea was to update the Marquise de Sade’s unfinished 1785 novel Les 120 Journées de Sodome ou l'école du libertinage (The 120 Days of Sodom, or the School of Libertinage) to the last days of WWII. Knowing their days are numbered, four fascist Italian oligarchs (representing the government, the church, the judiciary, and finance) recruit a squad of equally sadistic minions to kidnap 18 teenagers (9 male, 9 female) to torture / rape / mutilate / murder in a final four-month long orgy of self-indulgence before the Allies close in.
You see why I do not recommend this film to anyone. The premise is all one needs, but Pasolini filmed it in excruciating detail, leaving nothing to the imagination.* The only time I saw it was at a screening packed with hard core punks in the early 1980s and many of them stormed out of the theater, screaming obscenities at the movie.
Trump’s recent rally at Madison Square Garden is his 120 days.
Fortunately, we need only endure him one week longer.
By all accounts, Trump longed to appear onstage at Madison Square Garden before an adoring crowd. This probably goes back to his earliest brushes with professional wrestling, when he envied the grapplers but of course lacked the courage and stamina to put in the physically hard work to earn the accolades they did (completely scripted accolades, of course, but accolades nonetheless; Trump does not distinguish between reality and make believe).
He grooved on the big rallies in his 2016 campaign, relishing in playing the part of a mocking clown to tweak the noses of the establishment. He won -- something even he didn’t actually expect to happen – and tried governing in the same manner.
We won’t go into the disaster that turned out to be. If you acknowledge reality, you acknowledge reality; it you don’t, hell awaits.
A one trick pony, Trump tried the same thing in 2020 only to get his ample Depends clad posterior handed to him by Joe Biden.
Trump has never won a majority of the popular vote; indeed, in 2016 he didn’t even win a plurality, coming in with 41.6% of the popular vote at 62,984,828 behind Clinton’s 48.2% at 65,853,514, a deficit of 2,868,686 votes.
Thanks to experienced GOP campaigners, however, he threaded the needle in four crucial swing states, enabling him to win in the Electoral College.
Despite Trump’s lies to the contrary, Clinton accepted defeat and conceded the election, not challenging it.
In 2020, however, he scooched up his percentage to 46.8% at 74,223,975 votes only to be gobsmacked by Joe Biden’s 51.3% and 81,283,501 votes, a deficit of 7,059,526 votes.
2024 does not promise to serve Trump better -- and he knows it.
This is his pathetic last hurrah, his final self-indulgent fantasy before the dark waters of dementia (or tertiary syphilis; your guess is as good as mine) forever closes over his head. Like the libertine sadists in both de Sade’s and Pasolini’s stories, he wants to go out with one grand narcissistic orgy of vengeance, not giving a rat’s patoot about what happens afterwards to those closest to him, much less the voters who followed him or the country he falsely swore to serve.
Seriously, read the plot synopsis of the book and / or movie. Look at how the sadists deliberately debauch and degrade their own daughters.
‘Nuff sed, as a comic book editor once remarked.
And here’s the kneeslapper: Trump got upstaged at his own party.
Today the chatter all focuses on the minions who tried to curry favor by out-Trumping him. They displayed their hatred and bigotry proudly to the entire world – so proudly that Republicans running for public office elsewhere found it necessary to distance themselves from those remarks.
Too late, folks. Lay down with pigs, get up smelling like pig shit.
Vote Blue.

* Pasolini was apparently tortured and murdered by far-right terrorists for pulling back the curtain to reveal what they were. This may be the ultimate accolade ever given to a film director.
