Writing Report April 29, 2022

While I’m not moving as fast on my current work in progress as I’d like (family obligations & other interruptions are the main culprits) I am maintaining a good, steady pace.

I crested 65K words this week and if I’m productive this weekend might reach 70K, for a first draft that will clock in at around 85K.

I’ll be trimming this back to 75K in the second and third drafts.  As I mentioned previously, my first drafts of longer stories tend to be loose and shaggy while my short stories are often very close to the first draft when I finish them.

For this work in progress I know I’m going to need to go back and refine various characters’ voices, give them more distinct patterns of speech.

For me, this isn’t difficult.  Once the information is down on the page, tweaking it to sound distinctive is a relatively easy prospect.

It’s just getting it down that can be the chore.

I forget which scribe said it, but having written is often more enjoyable than actually writing.
