Gardening Report November 12, 2021
Well, we’re all wired up at the garden.
I finished stringing the wire to replace the zip ties used to hold the chicken fencing together along the sides.
As you can see in the photo I used a little bit of what was left over to attach part of a dismantled whirligig to the enclosure door.
We bought the whirligig a couple of years ago when we had an open topped plot because it looked cute and we hoped it would discourage birds from attack our crops. It did look cute but it proved to be no scarecrow so we dissembled it and used the stand for gardening purposes; the blades are now a decoration.
We also cut and painted some scraps of leftover lumber to make shelves in the corners. There may be a few minor details left (such as touch up painting and perhaps adding some hooks for stakes when not in use) but by and large we are D-O-N-E.
The new drip system seems to be working, and the nice thing about it is that it’s much easier to fidget with it than previous systems.
Soon-ok is growing frustrated because we’re at that part of the season where there’s not much one can do except let the plants grow. So far the winter crops (kale, bok choy, spinach, lettuce, garlic, onions, leeks, etc.) seem to be thriving though some bug is going after the spinach, eating enough to do damage but not ruin the crop.
Come spring we will plan out the new crop rotation and set up the rods and wire frames we use for tomatoes and cucumbers, but right now we can relax a bit.
