Business As UNusual [FICTOID]

Business As UNusual [FICTOID]

Down in the basement, the housewife scowled at the rather large interdimensional portal her computer opened up.

Nobody in her family knew how much she knew about computers.

Oh, they knew she was smart, but they had no idea how smart.

She took obsolete computers and older model tablets and broken cell phones apart then put them back together in odd and interesting ways.

This project was supposed to anticipate winning lottery numbers -- the housewife’s secret way of supplementing the family income -- but this time something went wrong and the portal sparkled like lightning.

The housewife ignored that and wondered if something alien would come through.

The family dog whined and backed up like Michael Jackson moonwalking.

The housewife embraced the frightened pooch.  “There, there,” she said, but frankly she felt worried:  Too much energy leaked through the portal.

“I think we better get out of here,” she said, not at all certain when -- or if -- she would return.

The portal glowed a brilliant green, then swelled up three times its previous size before vanishing.

The housewife blinked.  “That’s it?” she asked.  “All that hoopla for nothing?”

The dog whined while she looked where the portal once floated.  It left no trace of its existence.  “I think this concludes my portal work,” she said.  “No sane person would do something like that.”

Her dog looked up at her.  “You can say that again,” he said.
