Drama In And Out Of The Lab [FICTOID]

“You were alone with Trevor for 16 hours!”

“OMG -- we were in a bathysphere at the bottom of the Marianas Trench!”

“Still, you were alone,” said Dale.

Sandy shook her head.  Well, now the shoe has dropped, she thought.  Ever since she came back from the international research expedition to work inside the lab, Dale acted like something was eating away at him.

“We were connected to the ship by fiber optic cable the entire time,” she said.  “Nothing hidden, nothing secret.”

She didn’t know if this would persuade Dale, and frankly she grew tired of trying.

Dale glared at her.  “Call me jealous,” he began.

“Okay, I will:  Jealous.  Insanely jealous.”

“I just can’t abide the thought of losing you,” he said.  “I feel like a bystander in our relationship.”

“Oh, come on,” Sandy said.  “Grow up.  You can’t wallow in insecurity.”

They heard a knock and Trevor stuck his head in the door.  “Hi.  I was passing by and heard you arguing.  What’s the matter?”

“Dale is upset we spent 16 hours in the bathysphere.”

Dale looked embarrassed.  “Well, you know how it is,” he said.  “Sandy’s a beautiful smart gal, you’re a handsome, smart guy -- “

“Who’s gay,” said Trevor.

Dale and Sandy both blinked, then she burst out laughing.

“She’s a wonderful person and a great microbiologist,” Trevor said, “but not my type.

“And relax, neither are you.”

Dale looked sheepishly at Sandy.  “Will you forgive me?”

She ruffled his hair.  “I will, you big dope -- but don’t think I won’t mention this in my acceptance speech if I ever with the Nobel Prize.”

“I don’t know about the Nobel Prize,” said Trevor, “but you two deserve an Emmy for best daytime drama.”
