write what you know

write what you know

write what you know?
I know what it feels like
to take a crisp new notebook
and hear the tiny crack as I open it
and feel the cool slick flat paper
under my hand as I write with my pen
it’s like opening up a virgin
in a short while
the cover is no longer as firm
the paper is swollen and soft
with moisture and skin oil
the pages are filled with my
inscrutable scrawls
and despite all that
the notebook remains my lover
holding my secrets
and sharing them back with me
there will be other notesbooks like this one
but never one that can replace this one
(and that’s true of every notebook)
