Gardening Report August 19, 2022

Much to our surprise and delight, the gophers seemed to have moved on, either looking for a different menu, driven out by sonic stakes, caught in traps, or eaten by the bobcats and coyotes who prowl the community gardens after dark (gardeners are urged no to be in the area once the sun goes down).

As a result, we ended up having a fairly decent harvest this year:
Lots of spinach and Chinese eggplant, some green beans and basil, and plenty of cherry and regular tomatoes.

We’ve gone from a planting season filled with trepidation to one of satisfaction.

That being said, come November we’re launching into a major project:
Digging up the entire plot to a depth of 3ft, laying in a basket of chicken wire (which requires lacing the sections together to form an impenetrable gopher barrier), then refilling everything and rebuilding the walkways and beds.

So probably little if any winter crops, but we should be secure for summer 2023.
