Gardening Report July 22, 2022

Soon-ok came back from her camino walk and I from my Nevada trip thinking we’d find our garden ravaged by gophers.

To our surprise and delight, the gophers either got bored / found tastier digs / were eaten by bobcats and the garden mushroomed while we were gone, turning it into a mini-jungle.

We (i.e., Soon-ok; I just provide grunt work in the garden) trimmed back several tomato vines to concentrate the plants/ growth into a few shoots so as to have tastier tomatoes.

The ones sampled so far this season proved to be very sweet or very meaty.

We’ve also harvested a number of spinach and sesame leaves, some eggplants, peppers, zucchini, and basil, so what we feared would be a poor summer crop is so far standing up.

Come fall, however, we’re going to dig the whole plat up and law down a chicken wire basket under the soil to prevent a recurrence of the gopher problem.

At that point, we’re pretty much starting over again from scratch.
