eyes shout the truth [poem]

eyes shout the truth [poem]

eyes shout the truth
scream it
eyes put the lie
to everything else

look at old photos
look at the eyes
how few are happy
genuinely happy

some eyes look dead and inert
over big wide smiles
of gleaming teeth
and blown kisses

others look anxious
asking the camera
if I do this
for you
you will love me
won’t you
won’t you

some eyes are too happy
they reflect a brief bright moment
trapped like a fly in amber
knowing sadness
despair
will engulf them
soon enough

most eyes
are hungry
searching

I want to be happy
I want this moment
to last forever
I never want
to hurt again
